Sophie did it. She survived her first ice skating lesson. She fell four times, hurt her butt bone but after 30 minutes was able to make her way – albeit tentatively – across the ice. The relief on her face every time she successfully navigated 10-20 feet of the slippery stuff was palpable. In the video below, Sohie is the little one on the left.

Where Am I Going?
“I’m going home,” is my response when my colleagues ask me where I’m going now that I’ve officially given notice. Yes, you read that correctly. I have quit my job. My last day is March 29.
January 1, 2013
Happy 2013. We’re tired already. Chloe and her friend didn’t go to sleep until about 3 AM. They kindly awoke me from my deep slumber when one of them fell off the bed. Needless to say, I struggled to fall asleep again – as is always the case now that I’m old.

Merry Christmas
Chloe and Sophie let us sleep until 7:20 this morning. And then it was time to open the presents. Thanks to all our family and friends for sending the girls some lovely gifts. They are very lucky children. And we are very lucky parents.
Sophie’s Letter to Santa
Sophie wrote her annual letter to Santa, all by herself. The text and the spelling are all hers. I told her one Mallomar was enough for Santa because he was on a diet and that she didn’t need to leave him a glass of milk because he was also lactose intolerant.
Santa’s Message to Sophie
You have to hand it to people who think of these silly ideas. The basic video is free but if you’re so inclined, and have money to waste, you can upgrade to a premium version that offers more personalized bells and whistles. What a racket.
That said, watching Sophie react to Santa addressing her by name was pretty sweet.

Freaks and Geeks
Thirteen years after its short-lived life on TV, I have rediscovered “Freaks and Geeks,” a fantastic series developed by Paul Feig (of “Bridesmaids” fame) and Judd Apatow, and starring then-unknowns James Franco, Jason Segel, Seth Rogen and Linda Cardellini, among others.
