Like a deer in the headlights, Sophie was, when we said our goodbyes this morning. Although excited about school in theory, she didn’t seem to understand what she was doing among all the children and teachers.
She didn’t have time to cry or process the fact that we were abandoning her in the “Sophomore” (as her class is called) zoo. So after anticipating this milestone for quite some time, it was anti-climatic, to say the least.
I found out later that Sophie had a very good first day. But we all know that the first day isn’t the test. It’s how she reacts when it’s time to return on Thursday and next week. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
I was a little teary-eyed when I left the school, as the realization hit that our little girl is growing up. That there’s no looking back. That once she leaves pre-school in 15 months, there will be no more pre-school for us. That we’re all getting older.
And then Obama took the oath of office. And I was teary-eyed again. Good riddance, Bush. Hello, renewal. An emotional day all around – but wonderful, too.
