What Chloe Has to Say About Turning 13

Having started the tradition of interviewing Chloe for her birthday last year, here are her thoughts on finally entering the era of Teenageddon.

The moral of the story is that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Chloe did not look at last year’s entry before finishing this one and was surprised at how similar her answers were.

What are you most looking forward to now that you’re 13?
Being able to say I’m a teen, because apart from that I don’t think it’s much different from 12.

What are you most dreading now that you’re 13?
To be honest, I’m really not sure. Maybe people having higher expectations of me.

How do you think 13 will be different from 12?
It won’t be. Except now my parents have to buy me adult tickets at the movies. Something I’ve only ever dreamed about.

If you could turn back the clock, what age would you like to be again?  Why?
I think I’d say seven (or maybe five/six), because it’d be cool to relive my life from that point forward and do some things differently. Plus seven was fun!

If you could fast-forward, what age would your future self be if you paid her a visit?
I think I’d like to visit myself as an 80-year old. This way I could make sure I’d lived my life fully (assuming I wasn’t dead by then, which would suck, because then all I’d be visiting was a grave) and if I hadn’t, I could change that. Although I have confidence in myself that living my life fully won’t be a problem.

Do you think people will treat you differently now that you’re a teenager?
No… Maybe a little?

What do you wish you could change about being a teenager?
Pimples.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
An author, obviously.

If you could tell a younger kid what to expect at 13, what would it be?
That it really isn’t all it’s hyped up to be.

If you wrote a book about your life so far, what would the title be?
The Life of Chloe: A Book in Pictures and Rhyme
***************

Now that Chloe’s officially a terrible teen, here’s an updated list of her favorite things.

Stores: Bookstores. As far as clothing goes, Urban Outfitters (when I can afford it).

Books: Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones, and basically any other books by her as well.

Movies: Moonrise Kingdom, The Dark Knight Trilogy (but specifically the Dark Knight), Austin Powers, and Aladdin.  And a special shout-out to Children of the Corn, which will always bring back special memories shared between my friends and me.

Current Favorite Songs: It’s a long list, but here it goes. Life on the Nickel and Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls) both by Foster the People.  Knee Socks by The Arctic Monkeys. Crystalised by The xx. You Wanna Freak Out by My Morning Jacket. Kill Your Heroes by AWOLNATION. Afraid by The Neighbourhood. White Teeth Teens by Lorde. The Denial Twist by The White Stripes. Sailing to Nowhere and The Changing Lights both by the Broken Bells. Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry.  Last but not least (another shout-out to my friends), Temperature by Sean Paul (which you can’t help but jam to).

Side note: All of these songs (except the last two) are from the alternative genre, which I only got into about seven months ago. Since then I’ve completely reevaluated my taste in music. Also, it’s not “weird alternative.”

Bonus – my favorite songs of all time: Volunteers by Jefferson Airplane. Pokerface by Lady Gaga. Walkin’ On the Sun by Smashmouth. Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics. I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts.

Food: Pizza, but only if it’s from “Brooklyn’s Pizzeria” or “John’s” (in NYC). Otherwise, burgers or maybe pulled pork. Bonus: my favorite dessert: That would be apple pie – not apple tart, which does not compare at all. Apple pie.

Games: Clue and also a lesser known game called “For Sale.” Oh, and Monopoly of course.

Colors: Blue, green and orange. And purple – specifically deep purple, like plums.

TV Shows: THE OFFICE. THE OFFICE. THE OFFICE. THE OFFICE.

Actors/Actresses: Steve Carell. Helena Bonham Carter. Jennifer Lawrence is pretty cool. Oh, and a special shout-out to Christian Bale (THE Dark Knight) who is the only cool famous celebrity to share a birthday with me. I’m not too sure about my favorite actor/actress is.
