We don’t even have our puppy yet, but no matter. Sophie is angling to add to our non-existent menagerie.

A Proud Day for Sophie (and for Me, in Spite of Myself)
Our society has demonstrated an ever-increasing knack for celebrating the smallest of our children’s milestones. We tell our kids so often how great they are – for everyday behavior that should be expected. We have parties to acknowledge moments in their lives that in any other culture wouldn’t merit a piece of congratulatory candy. Admittedly, there are times when I find this coddling absolutely intolerable. We’re raising a generation of entitled children who don’t realize that praise should be truly earned and not simply bestowed in response to successfully walking in a straight line.

What Sophie & Chloe Love About Their Papa
On this Father’s Day, Chloe and Sophie provided a list of the things they love most about their dad. Enjoy, Papa!
Standing My Ground with an Irritable Sophie
I attribute the recent uptick in Sophie’s irritability to a variety of factors. Not sure how many of them are legitimate and reasonable, and how many are simply rationalizations I’m pulling out of my head to explain this phenomenon.

Thinking College
Chloe is an 18-year old in a 12-year old’s body. She’s already thinking about college. The other night, she candidly warned us that we shouldn’t count on her to get a sports scholarship. That didn’t come as a surprise.
Dear Tooth Fairy
Sophie lost her 7th tooth today. Very exciting for her. The bad news is that she can’t find her other six teeth! We have no idea where they are. They didn’t disintegrate and Sophie didn’t eat them. It’s a mystery. Sophie fervently hopes that the tooth fairy knows where they are. She’s written a note to her asking if she’s seen them.
Hangin’ with Chloe
I am sitting on Chloe’s bed, hanging out with her as she cleans, yes cleans, her room. And not only is she cleaning her room, she’s doing so out of her own volition. I did not ask her to do it as I’d given up, waiting to see how long it would take her to get fed up with her pigsty.
Magic Kisses
I learned tonight that Sophie used to think my kisses were magic. She revealed this earlier this evening when she complained to my husband about something that was bothering her. He asked her if she wanted a kiss to make it feel better and she declined his generous offer, remarking that my magic kisses – not his – used to make the boo-boos go away. I certainly don’t recall my kisses having that kind of effect on her. But it’s nice to know my little one thinks they are so special.
Saving Chloe from Her Backpack
Chloe had her annual physical yesterday. Aside from the fact that she can’t touch her toes (this lack of flexibility inherited from her papa) and that it looks like the right side of her back is raised higher than her left (don’t be too alarmed – the doctor isn’t particularly concerned), she’s in tip top shape.
Happy Valentine’s Day
Sophie was extremely disappointed that the clothes I picked out for her this morning consisted of jeans and a blue and green striped shirt. According to her, I have absolutely no clue about how to dress for Valentine’s Day. So my little fashionista picked out her own holiday-themed outfit today and made sure to wear a big heart necklace and two heart rings, and a new dress that’s meant for summer. And lots of pink, of course.
