The Impostors

There are times when I look at Sophie and forget that she’s only two. She likes to think that she’s a big girl – and she often talks like a big girl. Even in this photo, it looks a little like she belongs in a Elizabethan-era portrait, when children’s faces were made to resemble those of adults. She’s a child of many faces, this one. And when she acts beyond her years, Sophie the Impostor takes center stage. She seems taller than usual, too.

However, those moments of maturity are fleeting at best. As soon as I start losing sight of the fact that she’s only two, she shakes me back to reality. With the silly dancing (sometimes naked), the whining, the crying, the toddler “poopy” talk, the picky eating – her true age is thrust back into my consciousness like a missile.

Chloe spends a good deal of time acting like a pre-teen. I don’t think I ever acted like a pre-teen when I was seven. But the way she talks, the way she reads – I’m sometime temporarily brainwashed into thinking that my oldest daughter is hitting adolescence. Luckily, however, those moments of Chloe the Impostor are also fleeting. With the silly dancing (sometimes naked), the whining, the crying, the seven-year old “poopy” talk, the picky eating – Chloe the Sequel Imposter appears and acts like a toddler.

Seven must be an awkward age for the young generation – at least it is for Chloe. She’s caught between two worlds. The world of her cute little sister, Sophie, and the world of iCarly and Hannah Montana. It’s quite confusing, really, for all of us. The multiple personalities are difficult to track and hard to control. I have visions of a mini toddler Chloe whispering to real Chloe in one ear, and tweener Chloe influencing Chloe in the other ear. And when the two are whispering together, that’s when all hell breaks loose.

Forget the Blues Brothers, INXS Rules

The girls have discovered INXS. Let’s face it, the Blues Brothers are so yesterday. So is INXS for that matter, but Chloe and Sophie don’t know that.

Sophie and I were dancing to their music earlier. She’s actually quite good, and she really loves to move. After a few minutes, however, she decided to show off her gymnastic talents – attempting, without much success, to do a headstand.

My brother sent Chloe another CD mix for her birthday. We haven’t yet had time to really delve into the music, but from what I’ve heard so far, the Blues Brothers will truly be a distant memory once the girls get their feet moving to those tunes.

I’m glad to leave the Blues Brothers behind. They’re really quite annoying. Chloe’s also enjoying some of my retro Depeche Mode music. I hope to get her hooked on David Bowie next, but I’m not counting on it. While he’s always been my favorite, I’m not sure she’s ready for him. I won’t give up, however. He’s a musical icon who deserves to be appreciated by the young ‘uns.

Fortunately, Chloe hasn’t yet asked me to take her to see the new Hannah Montana 3-D movie. Having to sit through that would be a penury worse than arts & crafts. She did ask me if she could watch the Super Bowl on Sunday, though. She doesn’t even know what football is, but her teacher told the kids that the commercials are fun and the music at halftime is good. Which actually might be the case this year, since Tom Petty is performing.

That Was Then, This Is Now

Pardon me for feeling a bit nostalgic today. It’s my 39th birthday. With only one more year to go before the big 40, I’ve been thinking about my youth a little more than usual. Spending a lot of time with Chloe and Sophie over the last few months has also caused increased reminiscing on my part, to be sure.
