In four days, we will be dropping Chloe off at sleepaway camp for a two-week vacation. A vacation for us, that is! Just kidding. Chloe is already packed and ready to go. All told, she will have spent four weeks away from home this summer. Pretty amazing for a 9-year old.

Lobotomy
We went shopping at the mall earlier today. I really do not like shopping at the mall with the munchkins. Sure enough, the girls didn’t disappoint. We were at the store and Chloe was upset because she saw something she liked and we didn’t get it for her. Sophie was upset because she saw something she liked and we didn’t get it for her. I went to the cash register to pay for what we decided to buy and the two of them were still sad and whiny. The hubby saw that I’d just about had it and he asked, in French, “What do you need?”
No More Talent Shows!
Sophie had a talent show at day camp today. Of course, parents were invited to attend. Of course, I had no intention of attending and conveniently forgot about it until I parked the car in front of the camp this morning and Sophie said, “Mommy, my talent show is today. Are you and Papa going to come?” I then did the unthinkable. I rolled my eyes. A lot. And I turned around, looked my daughter in her pools of brown eyes and responded, “No, sweetheart. I have a busy day at work and I don’t think I am going to be able to make it. Besides, I go to all your school shows and camp shows just aren’t as important.”
Sophie One Year Ago
You’re Such a Mom!
I’ve hit a milestone with my daughter. Until recently, she was only minimally attuned to the fact that a lot of the things I do to bug her stem from my being her mom. And my job as her mom is to bug her.
Hilton Head Here We Come
Finally. We’ve booked our vacation and we’re returning to the place I first visited as a kid about 30 years ago. The Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island. Sand dunes, can’t wait to see you! Blue ocean, can’t wait to see you! Dolphins, would love to see a few of you!
Attitude
This is what Chloe would have looked like if Andy Warhol had chosen her to sit for a portrait. Eat your heart out, Marilyn Monroe.
What Does ‘Inappropriate’ Mean?
We were talking about the movie “Avatar” at dinner (in the context of a more general discussion of the quality of 3D movies) and Sophie expressed an interest in seeing it because she’s interested in anything that Chloe does.
Sexy
“Mom, what’s ‘saixee’ mean?” I was watching “So You Think You Can Dance” with my girls and Sophie heard me say that one of the dances was supposed to be ‘sexy.’
Sophie sort of heard me, but didn’t quite get the pronunciation. “What’s ‘saxy?'” she tried again. It was very cute. She sounded a little French. “What’s ‘sixy?'” she attempted yet again. I had to repeat the word several more times until she finally got it right.
She still has no idea what ‘sexy’ means. That’s ok. She’s only 4 5/6 years old.
